How is PET DOT SHOP different from other shops?
Share
Rather than positioning ourselves against other shops, we build the way we do by asking what is genuinely best for the customer. Three commitments shape that: ① a design process that removes all photo-editing effort from you and draws out the detail through a dedicated designer's eye and hand; ② production in which Japanese craftspeople handle everything by hand at our own atelier in Tokyo, from making the fabric onward (including a product range considered as a whole outfit); and ③ a balance of durability and price, with materials chosen per use case after repeated durability testing.
Honestly, we rarely think about how we compare with others. We simply focus on what works best for the customer, and we care about the following points in design, production and materials — which seems to be where the difference comes from.
1. What we value in design: finished by the designer's eye and hand
At PET DOT SHOP, all you do is choose a photo and send it. You never have to edit a photo yourself, because we want to draw out everything the photo already holds.
Every photo we receive is checked and retouched by hand, one at a time, by a dedicated designer: the intricate texture of fur when cutting out, the catchlight in the eyes that brings out your pet's expression, and — when several pets are combined — the tuning of colour and brightness between them.
We do not simply place your photo onto a product. We draw out the very best the original photo has to offer and rebuild it as a stylish dot-pattern design.
2. What we value in production: from fabric to finish, by Japanese craftspeople at our own atelier in Tokyo
For most of our products, every step — printing the fabric, cutting, sewing, assembly and finishing — is carried out by hand, one piece at a time, by Japanese craftspeople at our own atelier in Tokyo. Nothing is handed off wholesale to an outside contractor; keeping it in a workshop we can see for ourselves is how we maintain and improve quality.
Some products are made by printing alone, but every step involved in those is still handled responsibly inside our atelier.
Why do we offer print-only items at all? Because, taken as a whole, it keeps the design from becoming too much. If you buy pajama pants, for example, a simple T-shirt or sweatshirt on top balances far better for everyday wear than another dot pattern. We deliberately offer print-only pieces so that a set looks its simplest and most beautiful when worn together.
3. Materials: balancing durability against an accessible price
We do not make lazy choices like "leather because it is premium" or "synthetic because it is cheap". What matters to us is meeting two goals at once: that you can enjoy what you bought for a long time with peace of mind, and that the price stays within reach for everyday use.
So for every item we run a substantial amount of durability and other testing in advance, then choose the material that strikes the best balance for how and where that product will be used.
| Use | Best material | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Clothing worn daily and washed often (pajamas and similar) | Polyester | High colourfastness in the wash; holds its shape |
| Bags, which are structurally complex and need to be both light and strong | Synthetic leather | Water-resistant, easy to use every day without worry |
| Small goods that age beautifully and make good gifts (multi cases and similar) | Japanese genuine leather | The quality shows both the moment it is given and after years of use |
| Items for summer and outdoor activity | PU | Stands up to water, sweat and dirt |
That is the thinking. Not "premium materials throughout, at a price nobody can reach", and not "cheap materials throughout, falling apart in no time". We are particular about choosing the right material — one that fits your daily life and lasts.
